The treatment of eczema
The eczema is the chronic, inflammatory disease of the skin, developing due to the disturbance of the equilibrium of the immune function. Its characteristic symptoms are dry skin, itch, thickening skin due to the continuous scratching, rubbing, scraping. The skin along the wrinkles and folds due to the scratching and mechanical stress maybe eroded, lesioned, it can be blistering and oozing.
The eczema is most prevalent on the skin of the extremities. The disease is usually recurrent: the diseased skin surface may seem to be healed for a time, then the atopic skin inflammation reappears. The environmental effects (e.g. soaps, dust, the excrement of the dust mite, allergenic materials ingested, allergenic wash powders) may influence the probability of the development and the appearance of, as well as the recurrence of the disease. However, the atopic dermatitis could not only be caused by an external effect since the same chemical does not cause the same reactions in every person. The reactions of every single person is dependent on their state of health, as well as on psychologic factors. E.g., continuous stress may diminish the effectivity of the immune system.
The eczema maybe free of symptoms: the symptoms may be made to disappear, however they may reappear with a changing intensity. A sustained treatment is needed so as to remain symptom free.
The term eczema is broadly applied to a range of persistent skin conditions. These include dryness and recurring skin rashes that are characterized by one or more of these symptoms: redness, skin edema (swelling), itching and dryness, crusting, flaking, blistering, cracking, oozing, or bleeding. Areas of temporary skin discoloration may appear and are sometimes due to healed injuries. Scratching open a healing lesion may result in scarring and may enlarge the rash.
Eczema may be confused with urticaria. In contrast to psoriasis, eczema is often likely to be found on the flexor aspect of joints.
In some languages, dermatitis and "eczema" are synonymous, while in other languages "dermatitis" implies an acute condition and "eczema" a chronic one. The two conditions are often classified together.
Atopic eczema (aka infantile e., flexural e., atopic dermatitis) is an allergic disease believed to have a hereditary component and often runs in families whose members also have asthma. Itchy rash is particularly noticeable on head and scalp, neck, inside of elbows, behind knees, and buttocks. Experts are urging doctors to be more vigilant in weeding out cases that are, in actuality, irritant contact dermatitis. It is very common in developed countries, and rising.
